School Health

Notes from Nurse Sue….. Over the past couple weeks we have seen what I feel is a group of viruses here at Belle River Elementary. Depending on which part of the body is affected, the signs and symptoms will vary, however, we have seen or parents have reported:

  • Febrile respiratory disease which is an infection of the respiratory tract and includes flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, runny or congested noses, cough, swollen lymph nodes and ear infections. The virus can also cause bronchitis, croup, a harsh cough and viral pneumonia.
  • Gastroenteritis, which can cause cramps, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, and vomiting.
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Eye Infections causing red eyes, pain, discharge, increase in tears. A fever, runny nose, swollen lymph nodes and sore throat can also accompany the ‘pink eye’.

These viruses (known as adenovirus) are contagious and are spread from person to person-through respiratory secretions (coughs and sneezes), fecal contamination (not washing hands after bathroom) and/or contact with a person with these viruses. Once exposed symptoms can develop from 2 days to 2 weeks later with infections lasting a few days to a week. Respiratory infections and coughs may linger 2-4 weeks.

There is no way to completely prevent adenoviral infections in kids. To reduce the transmission, parents and other caregivers should encourage frequent hand washing; clean surfaces such as countertops and toys clean and keep kids with infections home until the symptoms are gone.

These viruses often resemble bacterial infections, however, antibiotics don’t work against a virus. To truly diagnose the cause of illness your doctor will take a sample of blood, urine, respiratory secretion, etc depending on the symptom and prescribe a course of treatment. Please keep your child home if they are exhibiting any of these symptoms and keep them comfortable by:

  • Getting plenty of rest and taking extra fluids (primarily water) to keep hydrated
  • A cool mist humidifier may help loosen congestion
  • Don’t give any over the counter cold remedies or cough medicines without checking with your doctor. Your doctor may recommend Tylenol or Motrin but never use aspirin due to the life threatening illness, Reye syndrome.
  • If vomiting or diarrhea, increase fluids and check with your doctor
  • To relieve ‘pink’eye’ pain, use warm compresses and drops/ointment prescribed by your doctor. Remember that pink eye is extremely contagious.
  • Call your doctor if a fever continues more than a few days, if symptoms are getting worse, your child has trouble breathing, your child is under 1 year old, swelling or redness of eye gets worse, or your child is dehydrated with lack of energy, sunken eyes, less urine or tears or tired and fatigued.
  • Call me at school if you have any questions.                                                                                           Nurse Sue

Safety

Safety Issues: Please help us keep Belle River students safe!

·          We are implementing an electronic dismissal procedure which will allow us

a safer dismissal and less classroom interruptions at the end of our day.

o         We will only be taking names until 3:15 so you may call in the request or be here prior to 3:15 to add your child’s name to the list. We will no longer be calling students down after 3:15. If you get here after 3:15, you will need to sign out your child and then stand by their bus and retrieve them. This will allow fewer interruptions at the end of the day.

o         Calling students down sometimes causes a loss of 20 minutes of instruction time per day for some rooms (That 20 minutes over the year equates to 59.6 hours of lost instructional time)

·          It is critical that when driving in the parking lot that drivers follow the arrows and not move against the traffic. Please be patient. We are looking at other possibilities for our parking lot but in the meantime please slow down and model patience. Thanks so much!

·          Parents, please stay in the lobby at the beginning and the end of the day to keep the building secure and to avoid more commotion in the halls. We have 440 students to exit the building and hallways need to be clear to make it safe.  If you have an appointment with a teacher, please check in with the office first.
